Four new subsea cables to boost Baltic Sea digital infrastructure

Sep, 05, 2025 Hi-network.com

A major E40 million initiative to develop four subsea cable systems across the Baltic Sea, connecting Sweden, Estonia, and Finland, has been announced. The project, spanning approximately 550 km, is designed to enhance the region's digital infrastructure by increasing network capacity, reliability, and resilience, addressing the growing demand for high-speed connectivity in both business and public sectors.

The initiative receives strong support from the European Union, with E15 million co-financed through the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), reflecting the EU's commitment to strengthening cross-border digital infrastructure. Once operational, the new cables will not only provide redundancy and faster connections between Nordic and Baltic countries but also facilitate secure data traffic flows, critical for cloud services, financial transactions, and public digital services.

The project will be undertaken by GlobalConnect, which emphasised that the subsea network will be future-proofed to accommodate anticipated growth in data traffic, including the increasing reliance on remote working, digital services, and international data exchanges. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, with full deployment expected by 2027. The project represents a strategic effort to position the Baltic Sea region as a leading hub for secure, high-capacity digital connectivity, supporting both economic growth and technological innovation.
