If your personal information -- like your phone number, address, or email -- shows up in Google Search results for whatever reason and you'd rather it didn't, you can request its removal.

Google's "Results about you" hub lets you track instances of your personal data online and submit removal requests. You have to go into your Google Account settings to find it, but there's actually an easy way to remove your data directly from Search. Here's how.

How to delete your information from Google Search

What you'll need:A device with internet access and a Google account. Easy peasy.

1. Go to Google and search for your data

From your PC or mobile device, head to Google Search. You can do this either in your browser or in the Google app. (For the purposes of this guide, I'm using Chrome on a Mac and iPhone.)

Now search for your personal information, such as your name, phone number, email address, or other details.

3. Select Remove result

Next, choose the "remove results" option. You will be prompted to submit a reason why, such as "It shows my personal info and I don't want it there." Google might ask more follow-up questions, like "What personal info does it include?" You can select contact info, financial info, passwords, or whichever option is relevant.

4. Submit for review

When you're ready, hit Continue and then submit your request for review.

If you're logged into your Google Account, Google will show that the request was submitted with the account you're currently signed into, and then it will email you to confirm your request.

FAQ

How long does Google take to approve removal requests?

When you submit a removal request, Google will send a confirmation email and inform you when the URL is no longer visible in Search. In many cases, this happens within a few minutes to a few days.

When I tried Google's removal tool for myself, I found the process simple. I searched for my name, found a site that listed my information, and submitted a removal request. My request was approved four minutes later.

"Within a few hours," Google's follow-up email explained, "the URL for this result will no longer be visible".

Will Google pull your search result offline?

No. The original page will remain online. The link will just no longer appear in Search results, making it harder for others to find.

Beyond Google, some directory sites and data brokers offer their own removal processes. It's worth submitting requests at the source to ensure your data stays private.

How to stay notified of new listings

Google makes it easy for you to sign up for proactive monitoring. That means you can receive alerts when new instances of your personal information are indexed by Google. Just visit the Results about you hub, sign in with your Google Account, add your name and contact information, and Google will turn on monitoring and send you notices when your data shows up online.
